Articles you may be interested in Boundary layer dynamics at the transition between the classical and the ultimate regime of Taylor-Couette flow Building on the weakly nonlinear amplitude equation of the saturated Taylor vor-tices developing in a Taylor–Couette cell with a rotating inner cylinder and a fixed outer one, the physical mechanism underlying the destabilization of these vortices resulting in azimuthal waviness is addressed using Floquet analysis. For narrow gap configurations, analysis and direct numerical simulations together with existing experimental results support the idea that the waviness is generated by the axial shear in the azimuthal velocity due to the alternate advection by the Taylor vor-tices of azimuthal momentum between the cylinders. For wide gap configurations, this mechanism is no longer able to drive the azimuthal waviness and a different mechanism tends to select a subharmonic instability. C 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.

Interaction of wavy cylindrical Couette flow with endwalls
The finite length of a Taylor–Couette cell introduces endwall effects that interact with the centrifugal instability and the subsequent wavy vortex flow. We investigate the interaction between the endwall Ekman boundary layers and the wavy vortices in a finite-length cavity via direct numerical simulation using a three-dimensional spectral method. To analyze the nature of the interaction betwee...
متن کاملChaotic mixing and transport in wavy Taylor–Couette flow
Chaotic transport and mixing in wavy cylindrical Couette flow has been studied in some detail, but previous studies have been limited to the velocity field at transition from Taylor–Couette flow to wavy flow or have used phenomenological, computational, or theoretical models of the flow. Recent particle image velocimetry measurements of wavy vortex flow provide the experimental three-dimensiona...
متن کاملEnd wall effects on the transitions between Taylor vortices and spiral vortices.
We present numerical simulations as well as experimental results concerning transitions between Taylor vortices and spiral vortices in the Taylor-Couette system with rigid, nonrotating lids at the cylinder ends. These transitions are performed by wavy structures appearing via a secondary bifurcation out of Taylor vortices and spirals, respectively. In the presence of these axial end walls, pure...
متن کاملVelocity field for Taylor–Couette flow with an axial flow
The flow in the gap between an inner rotating cylinder concentric with an outer stationary cylinder with an imposed pressure-driven axial flow was studied experimentally using particle image velocimetry ~PIV! in a meridional plane of the annulus. The radius ratio was h50.83 and the aspect ratio was G547. Velocity vector fields for nonwavy toroidal and helical vortices show the axial flow windin...
متن کاملTaylor-like vortices in shear-banding flow of giant micelles.
Using flow visualizations in Couette geometry, we demonstrate the existence of Taylor-like vortices in the shear-banding flow of a giant micelles system. We show that vortices stacked along the vorticity direction develop concomitantly with interfacial undulations. These cellular structures are mainly localized in the induced band and their dynamics is fully correlated with that of the interfac...
